Prenatal Fitness for Mom and BABY

Ya know - when I was pregnant I exercised faithfully every day - one hour. Yes - we have to make modifications to our exercise routines for both Mom & baby safety - however I was at it at least one hour a day. I attributed my very speedy deliveries to my exercise & I was thrilled with that. However, if I would have known 24 years ago when I was pregnant with my first - all that I do now about prenatal fitness for baby's health - I don't think I would have stopped - ever - my physical activity during my waking hours. As a Mom - we know everything is all about our kids - we will do anything for them. We take our prenatal vitamins & hopefully eat a healthy diet, stop smoking (forever I hope) stop drinking - getting our exercise while we are pregnant is right up there in terms of taking care of baby.

We all want Baby Genius - according to Nisbett if we exercise while we are pregnant & we breast feed - we can substantially increase baby's IQ. Again - we keep discovering reasons why this works - the fact is it does. Give baby every opportunity to excel in life.
I think this is absolutely the most fascinating research - There are many studies that show the long term effect of prenatal fitness for mom - how 'bout the one from the IOM that studied women 16 years after the birth of baby - & the women who exercised during pregnancy and had an appropriate weight gain had much lower incidence of metabolic syndrome. How bout the studies that show us women who eat more fast foods during pregnancy not only gain more excess weight themselves - but baby is born with greater adiposity. As I said in a previous article - there is nothing cute about baby fat. However, it is very cool to know we can help make our baby's more intelligent & give them a stronger heart, by moms sticking to an exercise routine through out pregnancy. Imagine how many other benefits there are to prenatal exercise we haven't discovered yet. Everybody wins!

Health Instead of Letting Health Stress You

Health is everywhere these days. You can't open a newspaper or turn on a television without seeing health in the news. Like it or not, health is all around us. Why is this? Well, for starters, it is important. Most notably, health is a hot topic because we have let it become an area of stress in our lives.
Think about the news stories that we see along with health. What else is on the news? There is war, political scandals, crime and crisis. All of these subjects have one thing in common: Stress. When we see these stories they evoke emotion and cause us to feel anxiety.
How did health get on this list? Shouldn't we be feeling good about health and healthy living? Well, we should be, but unfortunately that isn't the kind of story we are getting. We are getting the lack of health in most news stories. One can argue that this is simply because that is the state we are in now. Our health has gotten so bad that there is only bad news to report.
One can say that. In fact, I've said that we are in a serious situation regarding our health. I see the news, so I know that there are general problems. More importantly, I work with people, so I see that there are personal problems.
I see that we all want to be healthy. I also see that it is difficult for the average person to be as healthy as they want to be. I see that the status quo is actually causing more and more problems for us and making it more and more difficult to live healthy or even to avoid declining health in our lives.
What can we do? It is important that we emphasize the word DO. If we do nothing, we will continue to go down the path of poor health. By closing our eyes and taking what is given, we will not get where we want to go. By eating what is offered at the cheapest, most convenient foods, we will not get where we want to go. By letting our schedules be made for us and going with the flow, we will not get where we want to go.
The only way to take the stress out of health is to switch things around. We have to stress health. By stressing health, we can stop letting health stress us. This is more than just a play on words.
Think about it:
When we see the stories about health on the news, what are they telling us? They are telling us that the health of the world is in jeopardy and we are all heading the wrong direction. They are telling us that what we are doing is killing ourselves and our kids. They are telling us that we are not doing it right and are suffering the consequences now and in the future.
As we continue to hear messages like this, it gets easier to believe them. It gets easier to look at our own routine and say, "Wow, I am unhealthy." While it may be true, it doesn't mean that things have to stay this way.
That is the first step in turning things around. We need to understand that health is ongoing and long-term. Health is not a one day or one week topic. The studies and reports that we see are done over many months and even years. That data may point to negative trends, but that doesn't mean we can't change them.
That is the next step in turning things around. We have to change. If you are going with the flow and taking only what's given, you are likely part of the trends that we are reading about and seeing on the news. If you are not actively focused on your own health, you are likely stressing about it.
By looking long-term at the life you really want, you can start to make changes to make it a reality. By doing nothing, you can only give yourself more issues to stress about. No one wants to be unhealthy. No one wants stressed out. But for some reason that doesn't seem to be enough to motive us to change.
Maybe a new way of looking at health will help motivate people. Maybe we just need to change our focus. Letting health issues stress us is only going to lead to more stress. Physical, emotional, financial and all other kinds of stress will be the norm if we are not actively managing our health. All we have to do is reverse that model by stressing health. More importantly, we are stressing healthy habits. When we have health we are able to stress the important aspects of life: feeling good, having energy and enjoying our time. Without them we simply stress over the problems that come with poor habits.
It may be a play on words, but stressing health instead of letting it stress you can really be the key to changing the trends. By making health an emphasis at home, work and school, we can take control. That control allows us to stop stressing about the problems of poor health and start reaping the benefits of good health.

How They Contribute to Weight Gain and Poor Health

There is no quick fix for fat loss, optimal health, and longevity. But, the good news is that there is a way, and I can help you down that path.   I am not interested in attacking any particular product or program by name. However, I do want to expose the truth about the $58 billion Diet Industry (and rising). Many of the programs and products marketed today are basically gimmicks full of false promises, magic potions, and misleading propaganda. Most of these counter-productive systems result in yo-yo dieting and can be quite dangerous. My hope is that the next time another quick-fix diet system (or product) surfaces, you will know better than to believe the hype, or at least that you'll think twice before you waste your time, money, health, and sanity. In fact, no sensible diet program will ever compromise your physical or mental health for the sake of looking good!   
Commonly used formulas for fat-loss diets:  
Liquid Diets
  • Most are low-calorie diets
  • Less than 1000 daily calories translates to starvation
  • Do you plan on living only on liquids for the rest of your life?
 Low-Calorie Diets
  • Any diet of less than 1000 daily calories will slow your metabolism and put you at a nutritional risk that could lead to health problems
  • Reduced energy levels
  • Decrease in water weight, not necessarily fat
 High-protein, Low-carbohydrate, High-fat Diets
  • Too much protein can put undue stress on your kidneys and other internal organs which could lead to health problems
  • High amounts of calories from protein, if not used for their intended purpose, can convert to body fat

 One Meal per Day Diet

  • Eating one meal (or two) per day does not generate a steady blood glucose level
  • Eating one meal per day promotes over-eating especially if that one meal is eaten at night-starving all day causes you to eat everything in sight
  • Eating one meal per day promotes bad food choices because excessive hunger will cause you to be less selective with your food choices
 One Type of Food Diet
  • Too much of one type of food causes nutritional imbalances and deficiencies which can lead to health issues both short- and long-term
  • All-fruit diets result in water-weight loss, not fat loss
  • This type of diet can eventually lead to muscle loss, which is directly linked to your metabolism. Since more lean-body mass means a more active metabolic rate, you will lose fat more quickly by maintaining and/or increasing your LBM.
 Processed, Packaged, and Man-Made Food Diet
  • Nutritional value is reduced or eliminated when foods are altered from their natural state
  • When you cut calories, you lose weight. However, if you only eat packaged, processed, and man-made foods, your weight-loss potential will be limited by food quality, and your health may be compromised
  • Our bodies cannot properly metabolize most additives and preservatives
  • Our goal is to lose fat, gain health, function and feel better, and live longer. Consuming unnatural foods is detrimental to this goal.
Diet Supplements, Diet Pills, Potions, and Products
In this age of quick fixes, many women try to become healthier and leaner through massive intake of supplements and so-called "fat burners" (via drinks, bars, and pills), but there is no magic pill, drink, or bar that will ensure good health, weight loss, or a long life. Keep in mind; the consumption of supplements in excess can cause health issues.   The use of diet pills may help you lose weight initially, but once you get off them the weight will return and you will end up heavier than before. Also, diet pills have short-term side effects and may lead to medical problems. As far as magic potions and products like creams and gadgets-they don't work!  
One Part of the Equation Diet
  • Diet programs that tell you to JUST eat less, or eat better, or eat low glycemic foods, or eat only raw foods, or eat six meals per day, or just cut the sugar, or just exercise, etc. may be good ideas and very helpful to your goals of fat loss and better health- but they don't give you the complete dieting picture.
  • Providing only part of the diet equation is like presenting a puzzle with some of the pieces missing-will you ever complete the entire picture? NO!

This is the bottom line on restrictive and unbalanced dieting, aka quick-fix diets.
#1 - Poor Health
Since most quick-fix diets restrict calories or do not allocate the proper nutrient ratio (protein, carbohydrates, and fat), and even completely eliminate important vitamins, minerals, and fiber, they put you at a nutritional risk. This sets the stage for a number of health problems during your diet, in the immediate future, and further down the line.
#2 - Dehydration
Some quick-fix diets promote low-carbohydrate intake. However, most of the weight lost in this manner consists only of glycogen and water. Since the human body is over 60% water, this kind of diet may lead to dehydration. Dehydration can cause fatigue, crankiness, stiff joints, headaches, nausea, aches, electrolyte imbalances, and much more. Severe dehydration can cause seizures, coma, or even death. The other problem with water-weight loss is that women are deceived into believing that they're losing fat. In reality, once carbohydrate intake resumes (even the good carbs) and the water weight is restored, women mistakenly believe they've regained all the "fat" they had lost on their diet programs.
#3 - LBM Reduction
Reduction in muscle mass is a common result of any type of low-calorie, low- carbohydrate, or starvation program. In fact, as muscle mass is lost, metabolism slows. A daily intake of less than 1000 calories is considered starvation, and the human body will automatically try to salvage body fat just for survival.
#4 - Decrease in Energy
When calories are restricted, especially carbohydrates, the body's main source of energy is limited. This energy is needed for the body and the brain to function properly. Otherwise, you'll begin to feel tired, cranky, and mentally slow. You also will not have the energy you need to be active and exercise. Calories do so much for your body-they provide energy, life, vitality, and so much more-why would you give that up?
#5 - Body Fat increases
  • Any type of restrictive or unbalanced diet is a recipe for failure. The hype behind quick-fix diets is often unsubstantiated-they are based on gimmicks and full of false promises.
  • Since most quick-fix diet programs offer ways to lose weight fast with no regard for health and safety, the results will always be questionable.
  • After trying a quick-fix diet program, any attempt to resume normal, proper eating patterns often causes us to regain more weight than we lost.
  • Regaining weight creates desperation, which often causes us to seek another quick fix. This process eventually leads to chronic yo-yo dieting, which is a vicious, unhealthy, frustrating, expensive, and dangerous cycle.

How to LIve Long and Prosper

Having reached my 60's and still being in good health, I want to keep it that way. My relatives tend to live very long and hopefully, I have inherited the right genes to nudge that along. However, from what I read and hear, even people with an excellent gene cocktail can enhance the vitality of their later years, and add to them, with a few simple steps.
Even more exciting is that almost anybody can improve their health and longevity just by attending to a few simple tasks. Some of these "tasks" are actually quite pleasurable and rewarding, and therein lies even more good news.
I'm going to skip the parts about nutrition and exercise per se. Those two areas are generating tons of literature, and often conflicting reports about the value of this nutritional item, that diet, or some particular exercise or exercise program. The bottom line here is that if you are not staying on top of everything going on, start taking a daily multivitamin, take regular walks or other physically demanding activity, get some rest, learn to relax, and see your doctor regularly.
Now, let's talk about the two other things that anybody can do to help their body and brain survive longer and in better health. Let's talk about activity and connectivity.
Activity:
Yes, I know I mentioned "exercise" already. While exercise certainly IS activity and DOES fit into this discussion, I want to look at activity from a slightly different angle for the moment. When I use the word "activity" here, I really mean...well...activity. Having a wide range of activities in your life pushes a lot of physical and mental buttons that help keep the juices flowing. This can be anything from taking the grandkids to the zoo, to gardening (exercise...okay, taking the grandkids to the zoo is exercise), needlepoint, following sports, keeping up with the news, writing letters to the editor, working crossword puzzles, reading books and so on. More good news. Sex qualifies as a beneficial activity!
The point is that when we regularly produce interest and challenge for our bodies and minds, they respond by staying a little younger a little longer. While aging and its effects are ultimately inevitable, the pathway we travel and the experiences we have along the way are very much under our control most of the time.
Years ago, I was the business manager for a mental health facility in Florida. We had a geriatrics program. It was heart-breaking to see these people, many of whom seemed perfectly healthy for their age, just sit and stare, ask the same questions over and over, or retreat into some internal closet where they waited for death.
Dianne, the RN in charge of the geriatric program, told me that most of those people should not have wound up there. They had simply slid down the slippery slope that begins to become created when we start to lose interest in people and events around us. As friends their age began to pass away, as children moved off to start their lives elsewhere, as society found new entertainments and interests about which they knew little, they began to barricade off parts of their lives until they found themselves carted off to a geriatric program in the basement of a local church while they waited for their blank or boring days to end.
Dianne explained that often something as simple as a hobby or reconnecting with a loved one or finding new contacts and interests was all that was needed to produce almost miraculous changes in the person...or to prevent them becoming isolated and aged in the first place.
This brings up the second point.
Connectivity:
By connectivity, I simply mean being a part of the community. It has been shown that married people, for example, tend to live longer and healthier lives than those living alone. Interestingly enough, the state of the marriage has less to do with it than the existence of the relationship itself. People with pets tend to live longer healthier lives than those without. As alluded to above, those without connections to other members of society may age more rapidly, both mentally and physically, than if they were so connected.
Another point of this, by the way, is that being a part of some "society", large or small, can be a make or break factor in this aging stuff. People who go to church and who are a part of that community, or people who take part time jobs or volunteer can find a position which helps define them and anchor them to the living, breathing community around them. So many people, my father included, die shortly after retirement having accepted the loss of their defining job or position as an end to a lively definition of self. Many researchers have speculated that no longer having a context and definition of who and what they are contributes to an earlier decline and death.
While there is no magic bullet as yet to prevent the effects and ultimate result of aging, by maintaining an interest in life, remaining an active participant, and interweaving your life with the lives of others may be a step towards a longer, healthier senior life and lifestyle. It's more fun, too!

The Basis of True Health

Today nearly everyone it seems has some kind of health issue. If it's not a serious internal illness like cancer, tumors or heart disease, then it's joint or mobility issues, inability to focus or any of thousands of different ailments affecting people today. Of course the human body is an immensely complex work of art and biology so the more complex something gets, the greater the chances of something going wrong.
This is evidenced by the fact that there are so many tens or hundreds of millions of people who simply don't feel well. The reasons for this are actually simpler than most are ready to believe. The mainstream media makes everything so complex that most simply can`t believe that simple things such as what foods you eat, deep breathing, exercise and simple meditation for example can actually alleviate so much of their chronic health issues. It's obvious that the truth about what really causes illness and what the true regulator of health and healing are never going to come from mainstream sources.
While more and more are coming to understand the role that nutrition plays in disease and healing, even this is only a secondary reason for illness and health. It's true that if our environment were pure and we were only eating a variety of truly healthy, organic and raw foods in their natural state this alone would keep us healthy and barring accidents guarantee us a strong, healthy and long life. But there is still something more to why those foods are healthy that most either don`t talk about or simply don`t understand to the degree necessary to truly benefit from.
With all the advertising out there trying to push a new pill that will cure all your ills, it can be very easy to get confused even for those of us who know what is hype and what is real. You often have to dig deep and long to find the real truth.
The Chinese in their search for the "elixir of immortality" researched everything from minerals, herbs, various drug and mineral combinations, some of which would be considered complex even by today's standards. Much of this was done by a group known as the Taoists monks. Taoism is one of the three major religions of China along with Confucianism and Buddhism. The Taoists were often some of the most practical, realistic and scientific. They were searching for anything and everything they could find to help them live as long as possible. They did this not because they were afraid of death, but because the longer they could keep the body alive, the more time they had to cultivate their spiritual training and achieve oneness with the universe.

We are not only a physical being but a spiritual being as well. We have a physical body and an energy or spirit body. We are also beings of light, luminous beings not just crude matter itself, but living matter with life, thoughts, spirit energy and more.
As the physicist Popp has also come to understand, our bodies are indeed store houses for bio-luminescent energy and this is in fact how all our cells communicate. This is the reason why sunlight is so vital for health and healing. While this knowledge is a far cry from what western medicine would have us believe, it is indeed nonetheless true. The west tries to convince everyone that a human being is nothing more than a mechanism that is not capable of self healing, or at least certainly not without their interventions through drugs and surgery.
In times of catastrophic accidents or acute illness, surgery and drugs can be life savers and it`s good we have them. But in the vast majority of health issues today such intervention is simply not needed. When the right energy techniques, nutrition and other healing techniques are employed the body can and will heal itself according to it`s own blueprint.
Western medicine takes the mechanistic view of the body, that the body is like any machine and that since our machines can't repair themselves, neither can your body. Even when the body is shown to heal countless times once it's given the right nutrients and conditions, most western doctors still stubbornly refuse to believe that the body healed without some so called "wonderful drug" of their own creation.
If a person is ever healed of anything serious such as cancer, tumors or the like, they stubbornly, blindly and arrogantly conclude automatically that the person was "misdiagnosed". Either way it shows the failure of most western medicine when dealing with non-communicable internal illness. If they misdiagnosed it in the first place or they could not cure it no matter what it was, either way this shows the abysmal failure of their techniques and approach.
The reason that Chi is the most important single factor in your health is because your entire body is essentially a large bio-electric magnet. It's known that without these magnetic fields, life could not occur. Cells have an electromagnetic field (EM) and it`s this field of energy that keeps each cell alive. The stronger the EM field, the stronger each cell is and the more resistant it is to decay and death.
Chi is a type of bio-electric energy, but it's not the type that can be measured with a volt meter. It exists in a slightly different plane and level but still strongly interacts with this world. Whatever it's called the human body has and needs this life force to survive. When cultivated, this life force can enable one to perform great feats of strength, power, and healing. For health purposes it enables one to heal from serious illness and most importantly, prevent such illnesses from occurring in the first place.
When man first started to go into space and orbited the earth in the 60's, NASA noticed that their astronauts were getting fatigued very quickly once they switched over to their internal oxygen stores. NASA was hard pressed to discover just why this was occurring as it was vital to the continuation of the space program. After spending some time analyzing the difference between earth air and the pure air they were storing in their oxygen tanks, they finally realized that the pure air the astronauts were breathing was devoid of a critical element that is abundant in normal earth air.....Ions. Specifically...negative ions. They learned that the potential gradient or electrical potential of the air in the capsules was near zero, where as on earth it was far stronger.
It`s also known that the potential gradient of the air is much stronger in the country than it is in large cities. It's also very strong in the mountains and near the oceans due to the actions of waves, water and sunlight which generate large amount of negative ions. Negative ions are also generated after thunderstorms which is what gives the air that pure, strong, fresh and energetic quality afterwards. Static electricity and lightning, which is really just a huge static discharge are all proof of the energetic quality that exists in the air.
So what NASA did to solve the fatigue problem is install negative ion generators in their space capsules and space shuttles to ionize the air and fill it with negative ions, thus solving the problem of space fatigue.
Negative ions and/or chi interact with the body at the cellular level. The electromagnetic field of cells has a very selective force field as part of their defense mechanism which allows various nutrients and waste material to enter and leave the cell but keeps pathogens, viruses and bacteria out. This field performs a similar function to the cellular walls. This is also why making sure that we get enough EFA's or Essential Fatty Acids in our diet like Olive Oil, Coconut oils and other Omega-3 oils are so vital.
When we eat foods with hydrogenated oils for example, they disrupt the function of the cell walls not only on a physical level but an energy level too. That's because hydrogenated oils are only one molecule away from being plastic and are in fact a type of celluloid plastic. Plastics are pretty good inhibitors of electrical energy flow. So the cell wall not only loses its physical barrier but its EM shield is compromised as well. This leaves each cell open to being invaded, mutated and destroyed from within.
The stronger we can make that EM field of our cells, the stronger is the energy flowing through our bodies and the greater is our immunity and resistance to invaders and disease. This EM energy along with light (A type of EM energy itself) is how our organs are energized and communicate with our brains (An EM generator). This makes our bodies much more resistant to disease, degeneration and decay. As the martial artists learned, not only is health and resistance greatly increased, but even ones physical strength and toughness of body can be greatly increased through focusing on the chi or EM energy of the body.
The latter is a big part of how advanced martial artists practicing the disciplines of advanced Iron shirt or Iron body do in fact make their bodies so tough that baseball bats, bricks and even knives and other edged weapons can not penetrate their bodies. Through years of specialized training techniques including deep diaphragmatic breathing, meditation and certain physical exercises, the body can eventually become so tough that anything less than a gunshot will not penetrate or damage the body or even skin. Chinese martial artists have been responsible for greatly advancing the understanding of Chi, which has in turn been applied to the fields of health and healing.
This is why in teaching and lecturing over the years many martial arts masters with deep understanding of energy science talk so much about chi. Because in order to truly get to the root of all health issues and restore life, the chi must be built up, purified, and its flow and balance increased. In the presence of a body with a calm, relaxed mind all of these will occur at a far higher rate than normal. This is why learning to calm down the mind is so important to health and longevity as modern research is constantly reaffirming.
As a human being you know that you're not just a mechanism or some biological robot. You have feelings, thoughts, emotions, dreams and aspirations and a desire to learn, create and expand all the time. These are qualities of the spirit and things that no machine could ever truly have. A machine may be able to be programmed to emulate those actions and emotions, but it doesn't truly posses them because such experiences are spiritual qualities that no machine could attain.
Western medicine loves to explain feelings and emotions simply in terms of physical causes claiming them to be nothing more than hormones, neurons firing or chemical reactions. It`s the ebb and flow of ones chi that is giving all cells, hormones and neurons in the body the bio-electric power they need to perform the jobs for which they were created. Without chi, the body is dead. Just as a robot or cyborg would be dead without energy and nothing more than a non functional lump of matter.
If you have ever seen a lifeless body, you would just see how the life is no longer there, that the body has almost become just like a lifeless machine with no movement, no energy, no life. The point is that our bodies without that bio-electric energy is essentially just a lump of flesh. It's the chi and our spirit that gives life to the flesh and body and without it our bodies simply deteriorate back into dust from whence they came. That is why the more chi we have, the more life we have, the stronger we`ll be and the longer we`ll live. Breathing techniques coupled with a calm, relaxed mind are the most effective methods to build up and increase our energy reserves and thus our life force.
When we do physical exercise we are also building up more of this energy which is why exercise is so important to health. But the Chinese were never big on heavy, hard, tiring exercises except under certain controlled conditions and on a limited basis. This is good news since most people don`t like to life huge amounts of weight or the idea that you have to workout to failure to achieve health or fitness. This is especially important at the higher levels of energy cultivation where maintaining certain energy levels in the body becomes very important and is especially true for the higher spiritual practices of enlightenment.
Everything that is done in the modern lifestyle from sitting in office buildings with very poor air circulation of ion dead air, to having too many machines doing work for us, eating processed dead foods, all pollute and destroy the balance of our bio-energy. This also greatly drains our limited stores of enzymes needed for digestion and immune activity.
Chronic stress, fear, and worry all set up a situation in our body where chi is constantly being drained and scattered at an incredible rate. This is another reason why so many people either age prematurely or simply have no energy with such low immunity that they're bodies are breaking down at an incredible rate. This is also another major cause of infertility in both men and women which is something we`re seeing more and more of today.
When were born we received a certain amount of energy called Yuan Chi or "Original Chi" from our parents at conception. The strength, purity and quality of this chi is determined by the health of the parents at the time of conception. The mental and emotional state of the parents at this time is also critical to the developing fetus.
Even western science is now beginning to understand this through the field of Epigenetics. Epigenetics is a relatively new field of genetic study that now understands that your genetics do not control the body as was taught for so long, but that it`s really the mind along with it`s thoughts, beliefs and emotions that truly controls and influences the genetics and DNA.
This is in perfect accord with ancient Chi-gung axiom which states "The mind controls the chi and the chi controls the body". The Taoists and martial artists have known this for thousands of years which hopefully gives you a little idea into just how far ahead of the west they are in the true understanding of the human body.
The good news is that this even if you didn`t inherit such great energy and genetics from your parents there are many steps that you can take to strengthen and improve your own energy and health. The majority of those handicaps can be overcome with proper attention to diet, learning to breath correctly, calming the mind, exercise and other lifestyle changes.
By charging up more and more of that battery in your lower abdomen where energy is stored in the human body we can greatly enhance and strengthen our energy flow and thereby our health. Breathing exercises such as the 8 pieces of brocade, chi-gung meditation and other energy generation techniques will greatly improve the four main characteristics of our chi which are the quantity, quality, balance and flow of our energy.
The truly best way to understand these concepts is through practice, for that is the only way to truly know that chi energy is very real and just how effective it can be at enhancing all aspects of your life. This is what happens when we have the true understanding and the proper view of no only health and healing, but of human existence itself.
This is something that can only be experienced, especially for those who are not sure what to make of chi or whether it's real or not. Through the practicing of breathing and meditative arts you will come to see and feel in a relatively short time that the human energy is indeed something very real and very powerful force for self improvement on all levels. Health, strength and peace of mind and can truly be achieved making the human experience something so much more enjoyable than you might now believe. The end result of this is not only far greater health and energy, but freedom from fear, worries and doubt that so often keep us from achieving our goals in life.

Faith, Family, Fitness & Finance

Most of us will agree to the fact that our Faith is the most important out of the four keys. Then comes our Family...followed by Fitness or your health & then your Finances.
Your Faith is personal to you and I am not going to interfere unless you feel that you need some help.
Most people out there are struggling with the family situation resulting in at least a 50% divorce rate, kids without mentors & emotionally starved & divorced even before it gets to the physical separation. Again I am not a counselor and will not interfere now unless you reach out for help.
The third F....Personal health is one of the most critical aspects to your overall success because if you don't feel good, it is impossible to do any good. You cannot motivate yourself to get going and procrastination with the enemy called average takes over. You have to learn the basics of health and understand how your body is struggling to maintain. It is crucial for you to know how your body functions & give it all the help it can get to nourish & flourish instead of just survive. You have to find a way to help regenerate new cells and slow the aging process. You have to flush out the toxins accumulated in your body. You have to find a way to get the right nutrition in your body with enough anti-oxidants to help fight the free radicals. Add some energy food to the mix and you are well on your way.
The final F....the captivating but elusive finance. Someone said money is not everything but it's right up there with oxygen! I just read the headlines yesterday...2 million jobs will be lost just this year alone. It's about time we reprogrammed ourselves with knowledge instead of just 'education'. It's time we educated ourselves out of the system. Long gone are the days of finish school, get a good 'job', sign up for the 401K plan, chug along until pension kicks in! Except that 401K's are now 4K's, Pensions are down to pittance, retirement is pushed back to another 15/20 years, jobs are as flaky as the debt ridden system we're a part of....So what's the good news you ask?

Senior Citizen Fitness

1. Getting What You Want
Most of us are eager for a long life. Some of us are even desperate to regain your youth. That's why so many of us decide to get fit and join a fitness club. Great idea! But not so good if you heave weights or jog yourself all the way to the hernia or knee surgeon.
But in reality, you don't need to damage yourself to be fit. At the same time, you don't need to treat yourself with kid gloves either. What we really need at our age is a route to superb fitness without hurting ourselves ...
2. The Bad News First
Now, I hope your heart can take this because there's bad news from the start before we get to the good news.
Do you remember the saying, Life Begins At 40? It's supposed to be a cheering thought. But the harsh truth is that for many people life does begin at 40: it begins to deteriorate. Now, if you weren't so tough, this could almost put you off asking the same question about life after 50, or 60 or 70, couldn't it?
Luckily, you're tough. And you've accumulated the wisdom of a prophet too because you can see into the future. You know in your bones that inactivity will make those bones progressively weaker. And you know it's the same with your muscles if you allow it.
3. The Second Bad News
If you allow this to happen, your metabolism will also diminish. A diminished metabolism reduces the ability of the body to burn fat. Reduced fat burning leads to fat storage. Storing fat leads to greater weight. Greater weight leads to greater inactivity, and ... well, you get the picture.
But because it's you, you're not going to allow this to happen. Instead, you're thinking about going jogging or joining a gym or perhaps taking part in fitness classes. If so, that's great. Well, maybe it's great.
4. The First Great News
It's great because the really good news is that inactivity, muscle loss, decreased metabolism, poor eating and the accumulation of fat are not inevitable bi-products of aging at all. To a large extent, they are due to individual decisions. To put it another way,
· it's not your metabolism that slows you down
· it's you that slows down your metabolism.
Everyone's muscular-skeletal system is constantly regenerating and a muscle is a muscle no matter how old it is. Therefore, it responds to exercise at any age. The point is that loss of muscle and muscle fitness along with increases in weight are not essentially connected to age at all. What they are connected to is a type of lifestyle. But in this everyone has a choice.
Naturally, due allowance should be made for previous inactivity and current health before embarking on an exercise program. In fact, it would be sensible to seek medical advice before beginning any new physical activity, preferably from a medical practitioner familiar both with you and fitness.
5. More Great News
But, in essence, this means that workouts for older individuals need not differ markedly from those of younger people. Naturally, you need to be careful to avoid injury and probably take longer rests to recover. But in all essentials, in the words of another well-known phrase, use it or lose it.
Looking on the bright side, making the choice to keep active is easier than ever because there are probably greater opportunities and facilities available than for previous generations. Golf and tennis are still enormously popular as well as swimming and dancing. Fitness clubs and associations have appeared all over the place.
6. Jogging To The Surgery
But consider this. We are not alone. Lots of deteriorating middle-aged citizen desperadoes have already decided to join a gym, try out all the fitness equipment, start heaving weights or a jogging program to preserve their youth after 25 or 30 years or more of inactivity.
Pill and potion pushers are happy with this. So are chiropractors. So are joint and hernia surgeons. Business is brisk.
That's why it's best to take it easy at first. If you've been inactive for a long period of time there's a really, really good chance that it will take more than a few workouts before you become a world champ. Bet you knew that didn't you?
So, don't be too impressed by all the gadgetry in gyms these days. Most of it you can forget. My general advice would be to opt for non-weights based fitness program of a bodyweight exercises. It's safer and gets you fitter than practically everyone thinks possible.
7. Fitness Side Effects
We do much more than we generally think when working out.
This is because it's easy to think only of the benefits to the body. For example, we improve the capacity of our heart to pump greater amounts of blood. We also expand the ability of the lungs to supply oxygen to our blood and improve the ability of our muscles to utilise oxygen supplied by the blood. The better we do this the fitter we become.
But there's more - as well as becoming physically better in the usual sense of physical fitness, exercise also improves the circulation of blood to the brain.
8. Boost Your Brain Power
This brings at least two valuable benefits. The first is that it reduces the risk of strokes. The second is that it promotes the delivery of oxygen to the brain and improves its capacity to receive it.

Shocking Truth And Real Solutions

The reader is urged to make his own conclusions after reading this article. Everyone is independent in making their own choices for their own lives. Take what helps you from this article and use it to keep yourself healthy. If something you read here does not apply to your life or your current situation, then pass that information on to others whom it might help.
Choosing independence instead of depending on a nursing home or physical rehabilitation and care center can be the difference between life and death for you.
If this sounds unbelievable to you, do some research on the net and see what info is available to you about nursing homes.
Most of the stories that you hear about nursing homes are true. Society sometimes paints a picture of nursing homes or assisted living homes being the epitome of freedom and independence for senior citizens. But in reality, some of them are more like prisons than they are like hotels. If you are sitting in your own living room reading this and if you are dreaming that when you get older you will retire to a nursing home, think it over. Think again, and please reconsider your retirement plans. Depending on where you are located, depending on the individual place that you choose, your future life could resemble the life of an inmate, only you will have willingly given away your freedom by choice. You could sit there and think that I am exaggerating or you can keep an open mind and hear me out. Listen to what you might have to live with if you choose to live the rest of your days in a nursing home.
You might have to:
  • Spend hours each day sitting in an uncomfortable wheelchair even if you do not need a wheelchair.
  • Spend hours each day waiting to be accompanied to the bathroom or wheeled to the bathroom.
  • Spend hours each day in a dining room that smells like it really needs to be cleaned.
  • Spend hours each day trying to figure out where your own clothing is.
  • Spend hours each day begging staff to bring clothing to your room so that you can leave your room.
  • Miss your rehabilitation therapy because the staff lost your clothing and you are not allowed out of the room without your clothing.
  • Spend days and even weeks waiting for a phone call because you have no phone in your own room and no staff will pick up the pay phone when it rings.
  • Eat what they bring you even though you did not order that food. And beg them to change your menu even though you have put your changes in writing and they have made the changes in writing but they still bring the wrong food to you.
  • Beg and plead and cry for the staff to bring you to your room and wait for hours and hours to get help because they are short-staffed, especially on weekends.
  • Wear other people's clothing because they have lost your own clothing. You will wear clothing that does not fit you. And you will wear clothing that is stained all because you have lost so much of your freedom while living in that nursing home.
  • Be extra careful and extra vigilant when they are giving you your medication because sometimes they give the wrong medication to the wrong patients. (I saw in one instance where they were giving the wrong medication to a resident and thank God the resident noticed the mistake and stopped them. What if this resident had been mentally-disabled and didn't notice the difference? That patient would have been wrongly medicated and would have perhaps died.
  • Lose your freedom of choice in so many areas of your life.
  • Be exposed to seriously mentally-ill individuals that are bunked on the same floor that you are bunked on.
  • Be at risk of being attacked by patients who wander the halls because they are physically-fit to do so but not mentally-fit to do so. This list is only the tip of the iceberg. I have not listed everything. You need to decide for yourself if you will remain independent or not.
Does all that sound horrible to you? Does all that sound unbelievable to you? Yes, it might sound that way. But reality is that all of these things can and will and did happen to residents in one or two nursing homes and rehabilitation and care centers right here in the United States of America. Just recently there was a news item that one resident died of bedsores and of maggots in his eyes. How in the world can a nursing home not notice a man develop maggots? The reality of this is that maggots would not first appear in a human's eyes but would first appear somewhere else on the body. The eyes are one of the last places that the maggots would appear. We know this just from knowing what happens to animals when they get fleas or other insects in their bodies. If you have a kitten or cat, and that animal develops fleas, the first fleas will appear on the body or tail. Once the animal gets infested with fleas, then the fleas will disperse to other parts of the body like the eyes and ears of the animal . Same thing with humans. Most likely those maggots first appeared on the human's torso or other body part long before the maggots progressed onto the man's eyes. Yet, this happened in a nursing home in the United States, not in a foreign country, but right here in the United States. After hearing this are you still thinking of living in a nursing home for your senior years?
Do this for yourself. Use a major search engine and put in the words nursing home, put yourself on alert so that you receive any and all news regarding nursing homes in America (or in foreign countries where you live). In less than one week, you will receive hundreds if not thousands of alert news bulletins that will bring you all the news that is related to any and all nursing homes in America or in your country. Most of that news will be bad news. Most of that news will tell you of all the horrible things that are happening to residents of nursing homes today. Try this and you will prove to yourself that every word that I typed here is the absolute truth. Do yourself a favor and do whatever you can do to stay in your own home and in your own apartment independent so that you never have to wind up inside a nursing home by yourself.
Near the bottom of this article there is a link for a page that tells you the truth about nursing homes and rehabilitation care centers in America. Check out that page if you ever consider living inside a nursing home. Check out that page if you ever are in need of services of a rehabilitation and care center as most of these therapy places are located inside of these nursing homes. Once you admit yourself to a rehabilitation and care center you are opening up yourself to the possibility of living in that nursing home for the rest of your life. I have actually witnessed someone go from mildly inactive (due to a surgery) to almost vegetative state due to the lack of care and negligence and malpractice inside of a rehabilitation center that was housed inside of a nursing home. Once the person was in the rehab center, they transferred him upstairs to the nursing home, in error and once he was upstairs the degree of care went from some to none. The center thought this person had no family so they proceeded to treat him like they treat many who have no visitors come there. And then one day when the visitor was able to finally visit, they found this patient laying in bed with nothing on but a diaper and t-shirt. The patient was not allowed out of the room without clothing and there was no clothing inside his room even though his family had brought over seven shirts and six pairs of pants, and underwear and t-shirts that were brand new. All of this man's clothing was lost and he was basically a prisoner in his room, in his bed due to that lack of care, lack of organization and due to the loss of all (not some) of his own clothing. Finally, when family mentioned the situation to staff, they scurried around to find someone else's clothing for him (because they could not find his own clothing). So that is what happened on weekends when the staff thought no one was visiting. Another weekend, family came upstairs and they were horrified at the odor on the floor that the family member was staying on. They got off the elevator and smelled this horrible smell throughout the entire floor and the staff didn't even seem to notice the odor. Was the odor from patients who were forced to sit in wet clothing and in wet diapers for hours at a time? What was the odor from? Even the dining room smelled of this foul odor. One family member of a different resident actually brought their own odor-repellent because they were almost vomiting from the odor on the floor. This is what some nursing homes are like.
Why isn't this on the front page of the news? It is not on the news because the nursing homes and rehab centers prepare the place and put it into better condition when they believe they will have the most visitors. In other words, during holidays or during the most heavily-trafficked visiting hours, the facility puts on more staff and assigns more staff to those areas where the visitors will be. By doing this, the nursing home and rehab centers can present a place that appears decent. Then once all the visitors are gone, the staff mysteriously disappears to somewhere else and hte conditions in the nursing home go back to the horrible conditions that existed before the visitors came. That day when the place smelled horrible, ti was very early--before the majority of the visitors came to visit. The place would smell like that horribly for hours, and then before the larger number of visitors were to visit, the staff would then get busy changing the residents diapers or getting the odors out of the rooms so that when the visitors came to visit they would see that -supposedly-- that residents were being cared for. No one would know the truth unless they had been there one or two or three hours earlier. (For example, if they expect the most visitors late afternoon on a Saturday, that means all Saturday morning, residents could go without their diapers being changed and no one would know and no one would care. That probably is what caused the horrible odor throughout the hallways that day. (A combination of diapers' odor and unclean floors and unclean laundry laying around in the hallways probably was the cause of the disgusting odor in the hallways). Why didn't the residents complain? They probably did. The ones that are able to be verbal do tell their family members what the place is like but when the family finally comes to visit, the family sees that the place looks nice and they think the seniors are making up stories. Another reason why this is not front page news is because usually when these places are having their inspections they are warned ahead of time and they have a chance to clean the place up. There is a vicious cycle going on in many of these bad nursing homes and no family members are aware of what is happening to their relatives. Do not kid yourself and do not be a Pollyanna when it comes to the subject of nursing homes and rehabilitation and care centers. These conditions exist and they exist today!
I urge you, that if your family member is complaining of horrible or bad conditions inside of a nursing home, please believe what they are saying to you, because most likely they are telling you the one hurndred-percent truth. You need to believe the residents if anyone is going to get to the bottom of the disgusting conditions that are happening inside of some nursing homes today. Now they have people trying to hide this condition and trying to tell people that the horror stories are not true or that they are exaggerated. When you hear this and when they tell you that , remember these words, it is really happening in some nursing homes and inside of some rehab and care centers, right here, right in the United States of America. It is happening right under our noses and not many are paying attention to it because they are not believing this could possibly be happening. You are reading the words that are telling you the truth. Some nursing homes and some rehab and care centers in America are treating residents and patients horribly and they are getting away with it because they can get away with it. I beg you to believe your family members when they complain to you about conditions inside of these centers.
The reasons why people end up in nursing homes:
  • They cannot be left alone in their own homes or apartments because they have started fires with the stove or oven.
  • They do not know when to take their medication or they forget to take it.
  • They have flooded apartments because they forget to turn the water off.
  • They let strangers into their homes and that puts them in danger.
  • They wander off into the streets and their family has found them and put them in nursing homes.
  • They have Alzheimer's or some other disease that makes it impossible for them to remain independent.
  • They got an injury (i.e. broken hip) and they could not afford to stay in their own homes safely.
Those are some of the major reasons why older people or disabled people end up in nursing homes. (There are more reasons but those are some of the most prevalent reasons). Knowing these reasons and knowing the solutions to these problems can keep you or your family members independent and out of the vicious cycle and circle of nursing homes and physical rehabilitation and care centers. So, you are asking, what are the solutions to these above-listed problems?
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO REMAIN INDEPENDENT AND OUT OF NURSING HOMES AND REHABILITATION AND CARE CENTERS:
FIRES:
  • Using microwave ovens (that have automatic timers) is one solution for the family member who leaves the stove or oven on. They can cook by microwave and thus be safe from oven or stove fires. What if your family member insists on using the stove or oven after they have already caused a fire? Close the gas off. Have the gas company come and close the gas off completely. When the gas company does this it is done in a safe way. (Use electric heat and hot water and keep the gas off). If you do not want to close the gas off, divide the house and keep the oven, stove and gas-operated appliances out of the rooms that the senior member has access to.

MEDICATION:
  • Purchase timers or alarm watches to remind the person to take the medication. Keep a list on the refrigerator and a list near the television set with reminders of when to take the medication. Some seniors and disabled people are permitted to have home care or visiting nurse services visit and this will help solve that problem. You can have different members of the family telephone the person and remind them by phone to take the medication. You can set up other reminders also, for example, you can tell the family member to take their medication when a certain tv show comes on. (Time it to when the person needs the medication. That will add a little humor and it won't seem like you are telling them what to do but it will just be a gentle reminder. If you have a neighbor who will check in or family member , of course that really helps things along. You can telephone the person a few times a day and then remind them to check the water before they go out of the house or before they go to bed. STRANGERS:
  • This should be easy enough to handle. Most seniors who let strangers into the home are those who have hardly any contact with family or friends. See if the person wants to get involved with the local senior center. This will give them connections. Have visitors come frequently. Install a peephole on the doorway or an intercom system and instruct them to protect themselves and not let strangers into the home. Take the name off all the sales lists so that visiting salesmen will not knock on the door. Have an unlisted number. Most times salespeople find residents by their listed phone numbers. So take the name and address and phone off all the lists that you can take them off of. And keep them connected with other family members and other friends. (Most seniors who are scammed are scammed because they are found to be alone. When there are repairs to be done or when legitimate service people or delivery people are to visit, have a family member or two or three of them be there at the house. This way strangers do not know that anyone lives there alone. Word spreads fast, and almost always entire neighborhoods know when a senior or disabled person is living at home alone. Once the word spreads, that sole person becomes a target of unscrupulous unwanted strangers or salespeople. If you think this is not true, listen to your news stations and find out what is happening in the world.

WANDERING:
  • How do you stop wandering? It is hard but not impossible. First, let the person know that they should always have proper identification on them. And they should always carry their keys with them even if they are staying at home. Many seniors get locked out and then if they have Alzheimer's or if they are forgetful they will wander. All of this can be avoided. Keeping keys handy, having a neighbor on alert, little things like this helps almost everyone. Having a busy schedule helps stop wandering. When family members know that someone is to visit soon, they will be at home waiting for them. Having nice neighbors too, helps. Do everything you can do to stay and be connected with people (people you know - not strangers). Sometimes it helps to use memory-improving tactics --and using these also helps stop wandering. Urge family members to use calendars, timers and to use the newspapers to keep connected and to keep up to date on what is really happening in their lives. The first slipping into wandering is when a person goes for days or weeks and does not know what day it is. These things can be helped if caught in time. Urge the person who is living alone to look at their calendars every day and mark off the day that it is at the end of the day. This keeps a person connected to reality. Urge them to use alarm clocks even if they can wake up naturally. Anything that helps routine - helps them. Most people have large families. Have family members visit (invited of course. Call the person and say you are coming over; Ask if that is okay). Solve some of the wandering problems by having help with shopping. Have meals-on-wheels deliver some meals. Call for take-out foods. There are many ways to keep from wandering. Have a gps device if you travel by car. The main and most important thing to do if you or your family member wanders is to ensure that they always have proper identification on them, along with emergency contact telephone numbers. You can give them a Trac phone or a life-alert button . All these are good solutions and good ways to stay at home and not wind up in a nursing home or rehab center.

DISEASE and TERMINAL ILLNESS:
  • Though this is hard it is not impossible. There are still ways to help family members or to help yourself stay independent and stay living in your own apartment or home. Remember that most times, staying in your own place will prolong your life and keep you healthier than if you are going to give in to live in a nursing home. You can help stay independent by having home care at your own home. If you cannot afford home care, try and hire private help. Most people think this is expensive. But trust me, this probably will be less expensive than if you go to a nursing home or rehab center. Your life is worth more than all the money you have so do not hesitate to hire help if hiring help will keep you independent in your own home and apartment. Try your best to stay living in your own place and do that by hiring help or by getting home care (even if you need 24/7 home care, that will be better than living in a nursing home). In the nursing home, if you wind up in a bad one, you will be a virtual prisoner and your life might be in danger. (Note, we said if you wind up in a bad one. But the problem is that you might not know it is a bad one until you are actually living there. Only the persons living there know what the real conditions are like inside the walls of many nursing homes). Use all the rest of the helps mentioned when you have illness, helps like alarm clocks and reminder timers, calendars and the connections between family and friends. If you have terminal illness, you are better off contacting hospice than you are contacting a nursing home. Most hospices have better reputations than nursing homes do. Take your chances with hospice before taking the chance with a nursing home. Most times hospice is free. (And if it is not free, it is probably covered by your insurance company). For food and other deliveries, use your same delivery people, do not try newer stores or companies that ring your bell or come to you unsolicited. Always think safety first. Check out your options of meals-on-wheels. You can find this charity through the local Catholic Charities office or through your local synagogues.

INJURIES:
  • Falls and injuries are some of the main reasons that some wind up in nursing homes and in rehabilitation and care centers. So, avoid falls and spills. You can do this by going slow. For Heaven's sake, slow down. Know that in this time in your life there is never a reason to rush so much that you break a leg or other limb. Slow down! You can save your life by slowing down. It is common knowledge that once a person reaches a certain age, the most common cause of death happens due to a fall. When seniors or disabled individuals fall it is more serious than when a fully-abled person or younger person falls. You will have more complications and less chances of survival. You will need to survive the medical system. That means once you enter the hospital you run the risk of serious infection even if you are there for just a fall. It is public knowledge that thousands die each and every year from hospital infections. So once you go into the hospital you are at risk. And if you go in there older or handicapped, your risk is more than the average person. So, slow down. Prevent falls and prevent accidents. This is the very best thing that you can do for yourself. Slow down. I cannot repeat this enough. Most falls happen in or near the home and the majority of falls happen because someone was rushing to do something. Other falls are due to stroke. You can avoid that by watching your diet and your lifestyle. Take good care of yourself and your body will take good care of you. If you are smoking or drinking, save your life right now by stopping those unhealthy habits.
